HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE Another World Costumes?

Another World Costumes is all about creating beautiful, versatile and practical costumes which inspire children in the world of imaginative play.

WHAT WAS YOUR JOURNEY TO SETTING UP ANOTHER WORLD COSTUMES?

My journey started in response to a request for some superhero capes from my eldest child’s teacher when in he was in reception. I loved seeing how much the children enjoyed them and this whet my appetite to continue! I then worked alongside teachers and parents, developing and testing my designs before arriving at my first collection which is inspired by traditional stories.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT THAT YOUR COLLECTIONS ARE UNISEX?

I design without gender in mind. Imaginative play is a time for children to explore and express themselves freely, discover, empathise and work out their own ideas and stories.

WHO OR WHAT IS YOUR TOP DESIGN INSPIRATION?

I love naïve art;  its simplicity, directness, bold colours and clear outlines –for example, the paintings of Henri Rousseau.  These qualities are perfect when designing for children.

WHAT IS YOUR MAIN INSPIRATION WHEN YOU’RE DESIGNING OR PLANNING A COLLECTION?

I create costumes from a child’s perspective. They must be fun, visually appealing, comfortable to wear and durable.

WHO WOULD YOU SAY IS A ROLE MODEL FOR YOU,AND WHY?

My perfect role model is the children’s author and illustrator, Judith Kerr, whose warmth and positivity despite experiencing adversity early in life I so admire. I love her wonderful understanding of children and ability to convey the world through their eyes. (You must read ‘When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit’.) This child-centred approach is so important when designing for children.

HOW IS SUSTAINABILITY IMPORTANT TO Another World Costumes?

My focus is on well made costumes which are robust and long lasting. I sew the costumes myself and plan to use local sewing people in the future. I use plastic free packaging and minimise waste by bagging up fabric offcuts for local primary schools and nurseries. I am also exploring the possibility of offering a costume repair service.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO FOR ANOTHER WORLD COSTUMES IN THE FUTURE?

I’d like to add further collections including fairytales, jungle animals, mini beasts, space and pirates. I’m also looking at different sizes, for example, 3-4 year olds, and adapting my designs for children with special needs.  I’d love to work with schools, children’s theatres and museums.
